Dublin, Ireland and London, England – two cities on the other side of the world from Billings,
Montana-- are now part of our classroom at Rocky Mountain College. I had the privilege of
joining my colleague, Dr. Precious McKenzie, in creating a class to expose our students to the
world of business in foreign lands, and also helping our students to continue to develop their
writing skills. However, let’s face it – the best part of the class was the trip itself! We had a
wonderful time, and as Precious stated, I am very proud of our students in how they represented
our school and our country.
Upon our return to Montana, Precious and I talked a lot about the best parts of the trip, and I
think we both agree that neither of us expected to love Ireland as much as we did. The people
were so very welcoming and interesting, and land is beautiful. On our one day jaunt to Galway,
on the western coast of Ireland, we got to see the landscape and how a coastal community looks,
and of course in Dublin, we perused the lovely old city. Another thing we both agreed upon was
that we must go back in the future, and with our plethora of great, new contacts, we’ve already
started planning!
Our time in London certainly offered our students a few challenges in terms of dealing with an
enormous city and so many things to see. Our visit to PR Newswire was particularly interesting
and hats off to the crew there who engaged the students in a lively discussion and opened their
eyes to how businesses communicate in the world today. Also, kudos to the students who, on day
one were completely intimidated by the Tube system, and by day three were totally comfortable
navigating the entire system!
I would like to offer a special thanks to Paul O’Sullivan, the Dean of the College of Business at
the Dublin Institute of Technology. Paul helped us to make some amazing connections, and we
learned so very much from him. His hospitality (and that of so many people we met in Ireland)
was over the top, and he promised to help us create an even better program the next time we
visit.
In closing, thank you to the amazing students and my traveling companion and colleague for
making this a wonderful experience. I knew it was going to be a great course, but it exceeded my
expectations so much that I cannot wait to go back. Finally, thank you to Rocky Mountain
College for allowing us to create these special topics courses that open doors we never knew
were there.
